Running PIPE-PRO on Windows 7, Windows Vista,
32-bit CPU, 64-bit CPU, Apple Macintosh, and Linux Operating Systems

Special Announcement.

We have developed a new method for running PIPE-PRO on Window 7®, Windows Vista®, 32-bit CPU, 64-bit CPU, Apple Macintosh®, and Linux® computers.

PIPE-PRO is a 16-bit MS-DOS based set of programs with highly accurate algorithms that model belt conveyors, belt feeders, and pulley shafts. New computers with Windows 7 will not normally run these applications and many of the other software vendors have encountered limitation with the Windows 7® operating system.

A new DELL® Model 17R-N7010 wireless laptop with Windows 7® operating system and 64-bit CPU architecture was used for this setup. All of the PIPE-PRO functions run exactly as intended and the conveyor design reports can be printed on any network printer that supports the Printer Control Language (PCL). The printer used in this setup was an HP LaserJet Model 1320n®.

Advantages of Using this Procedure

The procedure outlined here can be used for all of your older software that has a compatibility problem with Windows Vista® or Windows 7®. You will be free to install all of your other software into the guest virtual machine that refused to install or did not function properly on Windows 7®.

The following steps are required to run PIPE-PRO on these new computers:

Install Oracle VM VirtualBox®

Oracle Corporation® is the largest software manufacturer in the world. They developed the sophisticated VirtualBox® software to solve the problem of compatibility and to avoid the constant upgrading of older software for each change in Windows. Using this method Oracle software users need to install the free VirtualBox®.

VirtualBox® is a "virtual machine" (guest) that operates within the Windows 7® computer (host). VirtualBox® is software that emulates an entire computer as a guest within the host. This is not a dual boot arrangement and the Windows 7® operating system is not modified. VirtualBox® is not the operating system for the guest but rather the entire guest computer. It uses the components of the host such as video, hard drive, USB ports, CD/DVD drive, etc.

VirtualBox.org

"VirtualBox is a powerful x86 and AMD64/Intel64 virtualization product for enterprise as well as home use. Not only is VirtualBox an extremely feature rich, high performance product for enterprise customers, it is also the only professional solution that is freely available as Open Source Software under the terms of the GNU General Public License (GPL). See "About VirtualBox" for an introduction.

Presently, VirtualBox runs on Windows, Linux, Macintosh and OpenSolaris hosts and supports a large number of guest operating systems including but not limited to Windows (NT 4.0, 2000, XP, Server 2003, Vista, Windows 7), DOS/Windows 3.x, Linux (2.4 and 2.6), Solaris and OpenSolaris, and OpenBSD.

VirtualBox is being actively developed with frequent releases and has an ever growing list of features, supported guest operating systems and platforms it runs on. VirtualBox is a community effort backed by a dedicated company: everyone is encouraged to contribute while Oracle ensures the product always meets professional quality criteria."

VirtualBox® is free and the Windows version is included with PIPE-PRO. Other free versions are available for Linux, Macintosh, and other host computers. PIPE-PRO most likely will run on all of the other host computers.

Install Windows XP SP/3 OEM on VirtualBox®

You must purchase and install Windows XP® Service Pack 3 OEM or full version software on the VirtualBox®. It is readily available on the Internet for $125 or less.
